What's that aisle all about anyway?
It's rare for me but I have recently been thinking about politics and what we can learn from things right now. Follow along with me regardless of which side of the isle you're on. (By the way, why is there an isle anyway? If we didn't have one would we be better off? What if the House and the Senate had to sit in alphabetical order like my first day of 2nd grade? What if our elected representative could speak for the voters and not their parties? Sorry I was dreaming again.) OK so back to the lesson we should be drawing from current politics.
I have to say that I went into the last two presidencies with an open mind and, like many, the desire for some change. While each Pres. can claim a few merit badges for deeds well done. Both Clinton and W Bush began to sour in many people's minds. While you and I might be able to communicate where we feel the Pres. fell short, I went looking for the greater reason or a view from the big picture.
It's my feeling that both Bill and George W. began to act as if they no longer needed to answer to anyone. They both began to make a series of choices that made it look as if they thought they were on their own and had no obligation to answer to others. At that point their popularity numbers went down and a great amount of dissent began to be heard. They both should have listened better and been mindful of their responsibilities. When I reflect on this, I think of my own life and choices. How often do I act as if I have no one to answer to? Would I be a better person, husband, father, friend, citizen, pastor... if I acted as though I was required to answer to someone? Oh wait that's how it is!
